The Grange School Library
Spring Term 2010
This term we have a host of activities based in the Grange School Library.
In addition to our regular bookclub for KS3 students, which takes place on the second Tuesday of every month (we had to miss out January because of the snow!), we will once again be encouraging students, particularly in Y7 and 8 to take part in Readathon, the annual sponsored read.
Between February 8 and March 5, students are sponsored to read as many books as they can. This national reading event gives a massive boost to reading skills and supports the life-changing work of two fantastic children's charities, so please encourage your children to take part.
As usual, we will be distributing free £1 World Book Day tokens in March - these can go towards any book in any bookshop, or students can exchange them for one of a range of specially published £1 books by top authors.
We are also running a Short Story Competition - the closing date for this is February 28.
Students have a choice of six “first lines” to get them started on a story 1000 to 2500 words long. We tried this for the first time last year and some great stories were written. We are hoping for even better this year!
The Aims and Objectives of The Grange School Library
The Library, in conjunction with other departments and staff within the school, works towards achieving the following aims:
- To provide a supportive and stimulating environment for pupils and staff.
- To encourage all pupils to reach their full potential as independent learners and develop a positive attitude to life-long learning.
- To foster the enjoyment of reading as a recreational activity in all members of the school.
- To support The Grange School's curriculum by providing access to relevant resources for pupils and staff.
- To provide resources (as appropriate) to support and develop the recreational interests of the pupils.
- To provide the opportunities for the pupils to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to access library resources.
- To develop an awareness in pupils of the importance of books and other resources as a means of recording and sharing human achievements, failures and aspirations.
- To contribute to the development of positive personal attributes within each pupil.
Help Us to Help You
We would like to remind parents and carers that:
- All students at the Grange School are automatically enrolled in the library and can take out up to six books at any one time, for a period of three weeks.
- After the three week loan period has passed and books become overdue, we do charge a small fine, and, should the book be lost, or damaged beyond repair, we would charge a replacement fee.
- We would like all students to get into the habit of returning books on time - or asking for them to be renewed if they haven’t finished reading them.
- Since books are carried around in school bags which also may contain muddy sports kit and leaky lunch boxes, we would ask students to take special care - we do provide plastic bags, or you can use your own.
Although we do use fines and replacement charges to buy new books, we’d much rather not have to worry parent and carers with overdue notices and invoices!
