Design and Technology

Design Technology at the Grange School aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to become creative and innovative designers, engineers, and makers. The curriculum aims to develop students’ ability to think critically, solve problems, work collaboratively and equip them with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world while also fostering their creativity and imagination.

Our curriculum is structured around four key areas: Designing & Research, Making, Evaluate and Knowledge. Through these areas, students will learn to:

  • Develop their creativity and imagination through the design process
  • Use a range of tools and materials to create high-quality products
  • Evaluate their work and the work of others, and use feedback to improve their designs
  • Understand the importance of sustainability and ethical considerations in design
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of design and technology on society and the environment

Ultimately, the Design Technology curriculum intends to prepare students for a future in which design and technology play an increasingly important role. By providing them with a strong foundation in these areas, we aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a wide range of careers, as well as to make a positive contribution to society and the world around them.

The Design and Technology department follows a ‘carousel’ system for Year 7 and 8, where classes rotate between different D&T staff and classrooms every 12 weeks. This system allows students to experience a variety of teaching styles and approaches.

Throughout Year 7 and 8, students engage in project-based learning, which provides opportunities for experimentation, skill development, and confidence-building. Each project is designed to cover a range of practical learning opportunities, emphasising health and safety, outcomes, and processes.

In Year 9, students choose two areas of D&T that they would like to explore in more depth. The department aims to provide students with a comprehensive and well-rounded experience in all areas of D&T, including food nutrition, product design, textiles, electronics, and graphics.

The department is equipped with modern tools and equipment in its workshops and food rooms, allowing students to work with industry-standard materials and technologies. Additionally, the staff is highly trained and regularly updated on the latest advancements in technology and health and safety practices.

To further enrich the learning experience, the department organises trips and provides opportunities for students to connect their classroom learning to the wider world. Additionally, the department offers multiple pathways for those pursuing Design Technology, ensuring that all students’ interests and career aspirations are catered to.

Overall, the Design and Technology department at the school is committed to providing students with a stimulating, engaging, and well-rounded education that fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and practical expertise.
