Our students threw themselves into a full week of hands‑on science fun last week, exploring everything from chemistry to electricity. Lunchtimes were buzzing with excitement as each day brought a brand‑new experiment to try!
Here’s what we got stuck into:
Monday 10 March – Make Your Own Bath Bombs
Students became mini‑chemists, mixing citric acid, bicarbonate of soda, and fragrant oils to create fizzy bath bombs. The finished result are stunning!
Tuesday 11 March – Flame Tests
A burst of colour lit up the labs as students used Bunsen burners to observe how different metal salts produce different flame colours. From bright greens to deep reds, it was a brilliant introduction to how chemists identify elements.
Wednesday 12 March – Fruit Batteries
Who knew fruit could power a lightbulb? Students used lemons, wires, and metal electrodes to build simple batteries and explore how chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy. A shocking success.
Thursday 13 March – Extracting DNA from Fruit & Veg
Students got hands‑on with real genetic material extracting it from peas! Check out the photo
A really good example of the jelly type substance in the top layer which is the DNA!
Friday 14 March – Van de Graaff Generator
We ended the week with a hair‑raising finale! Students explored static electricity with the Van de Graaff generator. Sparks, shocks and plenty of laughter included.
Poster Competition Winners
A huge congratulations to our talented winners:
• Charlotte & Eva (Year 7)
• Gilda & Suhail (Year ![]()
• Thisanan (Year 10)
Your creativity and scientific curiosity really stood out.
What an inspiring week celebrating science, discovery and the joy of experimenting together.
