Thank you to the 225 parents/carers who responded to this year’s Big Parent Survey.
One of the areas we asked for you feedback was regarding the behaviour of our students (question 3).
We asked parents to what extent they agreed The Grange School ‘makes sure its students are well behaved’. 69% of parents who completed the survey agreed or strongly agreed with this statement. 8% answered ‘don’t know’ and 22% disagreed or strongly disagreed with this statement.
In response to this, we would like to share with you some of the procedures and interventions we have in place to promote a well-ordered and disciplined environment for our students.
To achieve consistency in expectations within each class, The Grange School applies a ‘traffic light’ system. This system is visible in every classroom. A student’s name or initials are placed onto the green area when a verbal reminder of the classroom’s expectations are needed. If disruption persists, the student’s name is placed onto the amber section. If the student continues to disrupt the learning environment, their name will be placed on the red section. A 30-minute detention is also set by the class teacher at this stage.

Finally, if disruptive behaviour continues to persist, a Duty Leader or a member of the Senior Leadership Team will remove the student from the classroom, and they will be escorted to the inclusion room for the remainder of that lesson. A 60-minute detention will also be set as a consequence. If there are repeated removals from lessons, this will be communicated with the student’s Year Team Leader.
Detentions
Detentions are either 30-minute or 60-minute in length and run on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. 90-minute detentions are also run on Thursday evenings by a member of the senior leadership team. All detentions are logged, and parents are made aware through the Satchel One app.
To find out more about the Satchel One app, please see the dedicated page on our website or contact our main school reception.
Student Reports
Year Team Leaders alongside form tutors monitor student’s behaviour closely, mainly through positive achievement points and negative behaviour points logged on a student’s Satchel One profile. Students who are identified as needing some support and/or intervention may be placed on a report to closely monitor their behaviour on a daily basis. The student reports to their key staff member at the end of each school day to reflect on their report scores and any comments given that day with appropriate targets set.
Rewards
It is important to recognise well-ordered and disciplined behaviour in the form of rewards. We motivate and encourage good habits to be formed through our reward system. Our reward system has been updated recently as a result of student voice and can be found on our website.
Learning Walks
It is common practice for middle and senior leaders to carry out learning walks regularly throughout the academic year. Part of this process involves observing behaviour for learning. Feedback is shared and support is given where necessary following these.
Support for Learning
The pastoral team work closely with the Support for Learning team as well as the Student Support team to ensure that any Special Educational Needs are identified and supported. The Grange School offers a mentoring scheme with members of staff in Stapleton House as well as with our behaviour mentor, Mr Wingrove.
Inclusion Room
The Grange School has one dedicated classroom which is referred to as the ‘inclusion room’. This room holds a small number of students together with an Inclusion Room Manager – Miss Bickmore, who works alongside our behaviour mentor, Mr Wingrove. The inclusion room allows a quiet space for students who are removed from lessons to continue their work outside of the classroom as well as have an opportunity to reflect on the reasons for their removal. On occasion, students may spend a day in the inclusion room should their behaviour warrant a higher sanction e.g. persistent disruption to learning. This means the student is isolated from their peers for the day and are able to spend some time with Mr Wingrove in attempt to improve their conduct in and around school. Mr Wingrove also works with students in small groups who may require additional support regarding individual behaviour needs.
Suspensions
In some circumstances, the Headteacher may decide to suspend a student from school for a fixed period of time. This is when the student is not allowed to be in school. Meetings are held with parents before the student is reintegrated back into school.
Parent/Carer Support
In all circumstances of school life, parental support is key. The pastoral support team are in frequent contact with parents/carers in the form of telephone calls, emails and face-to-face meetings in order to compliment and work together on improving a student’s behaviour throughout their time at The Grange School.
