At The Grange School we study Physical Education to enable students to gain the skills, knowledge and understanding of the benefits of making healthy, active lifestyle choices and the impact it will have on their physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing. This will allow them to increase life chances through greater attainment and achievement, improved wellbeing and healthier lifestyles as well as becoming lifelong participants in physical activities. Within a broad concept curriculum, the sport and physical activity become the vehicle for which the concept is delivered and no longer the final destination, this can better enable an inclusive environment to ensure that PE also stands for Positive Experiences.
Students do this by developing skills, knowledge and attitudes within a range of sports, as well as exploring their own wellbeing and lifestyle choices. They also build on physical literacy and an enjoyment of participation in physical activity. Students will build their knowledge of rules and understanding of tactical aspects of different sporting activities and how these can impact performance and enjoyment.
Teachers facilitate this by providing opportunities for pupils to experience physical education, physical activity and school sport both within lesson and outside of lesson time. Within lessons, this is achieved by splitting the lesson objectives into “Know”, the knowledge based part of the lesson, “Show”, this is the performance aspect of the lesson and linked to the physical domain, and “Grow”, which are the inter-personal skills that align with the school values and ethos.
“Physical literacy can be described as the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life” (IPLA ,2017)
